First Canadian woman and second Canadian astronaut to go into space

A neurologist and a researcher of the nervous system, Dr. Roberta Bondar earned her MSc in Experimental Pathology and completed post-graduate medical training at Western. Dr. Bondar was one of the six original Canadian astronauts selected in 1983. In 1992, Dr. Bondar became the first Canadian woman and the second Canadian astronaut to go into space.

“When I was eight years old, to be a spaceman was the most exciting thing I could imagine.”

After her return from space, Dr. Bondar left the Canadian Space Agency and continued her research. She also developed a new career as a nature photographer.

Bondar has received many honours including the Order of Canada, the Order of Ontario, the NASA Space Medal, over 22 honorary degrees and induction into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. Bondar has also received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame and is the first astronaut to receive the honour.
