Orthopaedic Surgeon, Professor (Emeritus)

Dr. Cecil Rorabeck, who was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada in 2012 for advancing orthopaedic medicine, practised joint replacement surgery at London Health Sciences Centre for 30 years before pursuing other opportunities with the Robarts Research Institute.

A leading international expert on hip and knee replacement surgery, Rorabeck is a professor emeritus at Western and former Department of Orthopaedic Surgery chair at LHSC.

He was the interim Robarts chief executive officer and its scientific director, overseeing its consolidation with the university, which was finalized in June 2007.

Rorabeck started the Canadian chapter of Operation Walk — a not-for-profit, volunteer medical service organization. He travels annually to Guatemala with a team of health care professionals where they offer free hip and knee replacements to locals and train South American resident-volunteers.

Rorabeck becomes president of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in February 2013.

Western recognized Rorabeck with an honorary degree (D.Sc.) in 2009 for the worldwide impact he has made in medicine and his dedication to the community.

In addition to chairing the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in London, Rorabeck became a governor of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in 2011 and serves on the festival’s advancement committee.

He and his wife Linda donated $1 million in 2010 to Western’s matching funds program in support of the endowed chairs program.

A native of North Bay, Ont., Rorabeck completed his orthopaedic surgical training at the University of Toronto after graduating from Western in 1968.
